Bristol Palin: getting knocked Up not Ideal

Saturday, January 3, 2009

Alaska Governor and former Republican V.P. candidate Sarah Palin welcomed her first grandchild this week, but admitted that she felt both fear and despair when she first learned that her teenage daughter Bristol was expecting.

"We are over the moon with the arrival of this healthy, beautiful baby," Sarah Palin said in a statement dated December 31 and posted Friday. "The road ahead for this young couple will not be easy, but nothing worthwhile is ever easy."

Baby Tripp Easton Mitchell Johnston was born to Bristol Palin and her boyfriend Levi Johnston on December 27. Both Bristol and Levi are 18 years old.

Bristol Palin's pregnancy was revealed shortly after her mother was named as John McCain's running mate in August, and became a campaign talking point.

Sarah Palin, a devout and pro-life Christian, always put a positive spin on her daughter's pregnancy, but in the statement issued this week, admitted to feeling afraid after learning she was to become a grandmother this year.

"When Bristol and [Levi Johnston] first told us the shocking news that she was pregnant, to be honest, we all at first looked at the situation with some fear and a bit of despair," Palin said. "But isn't it just like God to turn those circumstances into such an amazing, joyful blessing when you ask Him to help you through?"

In the same statement, Bristol Palin said becoming a teen mother was "not ideal" and spoke out against teen pregnancy.

"Teenagers need to prevent pregnancy to begin with - this isn't ideal," she said before thanking her "supportive family which is dealing with this together."

Bristol Palin will return to high school next week to earn the final credit that she needs to graduate, according to the statement. It was unclear if she intended to pursue any higher education upon completing high school.

Levi Johnston will finish high school as he works as an electrician apprentice. His mom, Sherry Johnston, was recently arrested on felony drug charges.
