Obama Family To Welcome First Dog
Monday, April 13, 2009Breaking political news: Barack, Michelle, Sasha and Malia Obama are finally welcoming their new puppy to the White House!
The black Portuguese water dog comes from a kennel in Texas. It was sold to a family who gave it back, so will be "re-homed" to the first family.
Shrewd move by Barack Obama, choosing a rejected dog who needs a second home. Not only is it nice, but animal rights peeps will go less insane.
The six-month-old dog is named Charlie, though the Obamas will rename it.
A website, FirstDogCharlie.com, claims to have a photo of him! See below!
The alleged (and cute!) First Dog, left, and his relative Splash, right, who belongs to U.S. Senator Ted Kennedy. Portuguese Water Dogs are hypoallergenic.
Charlie will be presented to the family by U.S. Sen. Ted Kennedy, whose own Portuguese water dogs, Splash and Sunny, are from the same kennel. Sasha and Malia's new pet is actually from the same lineage as the Kennedy dogs.
The arrival of the First Pet has been a hot topic - almost as much so as Michelle Obama fashion - ever since the president promised his daughters Malia and Sasha, ages 10 and 6, that they would get a puppy if he were elected to the presidency.
After taking office, the U.S. President said they'd get a dog in the spring, as the family itself would still be getting acclimated to its new digs prior to that, and the warmer weather would make his daughters more apt to walk it.
The Portuguese Water Dog was a natural fit for the Obamas because of Malia's allergies - the breed is one of the few that are completely hypoallergenic.
According to Michelle Obama, the young girls have floated Frank and Moose as possible names for their forthcoming furry friend.
** UPDATE: The First Dog has arrived! Earlier today, a 6-month-old Portuguese Water Dog named Bo was delivered to The White House. Check out a photo of him NOW!Advertisements
